So with the worst video games of 2013 behind us, it is time to finish off the video games of 2013 with the cream of the crop, the absolute best that the last year had to offer. 2013 has been a big year for video gaming as the Microsoft and Sony have transitioned into the next generation for better or for worse and in their wake have left some of the best video games of this latest generation. 2013 may not be the greatest year in the history of video games, but I feel in the coming years we will see this year as one of the best.
Before we start with the honorable mention I should state one more time that video games that will appear on this list are games that I have personally played and reviewed. Once more if I there was a life altering video game and I didn’t play it then I can’t review it. That is how it works. With that being said let us start with the honorable mention.
Honorable Mention Injustice: Gods Among Us
Giving all super hero, comic book, and video games fans everywhere the opportunity to fight as our favorite DC Comic heroes and villains with the same system and style as the latest installment of Mortal Kombat is truly a wonderful experience. The story is fantastic, the fighting style is fun, and the opportunity to actually see characters like Batman and Superman squaring off has all the nostalgic fun of smashing your action figures together as a child.
The only reason it does not finds its way onto the list is the fact that the five games were just simply better and that is by no means an insult to what is one of the best fighting games to come out in recent years.
What was once a mod from the creators of Galactic Cafe has become one of the most inspiring games in recent gaming history. The Stanley Parable is one of those games that you truly need to play for yourself and see just how fascinating and thought-provoking it is. It is a short game but goes into great detail about the realms of choice and plays with the ways that video games are normally structured. It is a simple game, but sometimes the most simplistic of games are also the most elegant.
While I may not be the first to praise this game as one of the greatest video games of our time or even the greatest game in the Grand Theft Auto series, I still say that this is one of the best games of 2013. Not only is Grand Theft Auto V one of the most realistic games I have ever experienced, but the parody of life and the story that it tells is wonderful and on par with the expectations that we expect from Rockstar North. Not to mention the three protagonist system adds a whole different level of fun. It is by no means a disappointment and one of the best games of 2013.
I am well aware that this game ‘originally’ came out for the Nintendo DS in 2010, but the North American release on the PS3 was January 22nd of last year so I feel it justified to add to this list and also this is my list so if you have a problem with it then that is your problem not mine. But on to the game itself! Thanks to the work of Studio Ghibli, expert developing, and composition by Joe Hisaishi Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch is the greatest JRPG in recent history and one of the greatest JRPGs of all time.
The game is simply beautiful and it has that nostalgic value that will stick with players for years to come. When I got a chance to play it, I was in awh of it and continue to be to this day. Not only will this game make it on best gaming lists, but it will also make it on lists of greatest video games of this decade.
With one of the greatest stories that I have ever heard, The Last of Us is truly a game to remember. Created by Naughty Dog, this game took the world by storm when it was released in the summer of 2013, including many critics of heralding it as the Citizen Kane of video games. As far as games from this generation, I have to say it is clearly number two only to be overshadowed by what is by all accounts one of the greatest games I have ever played. But more on that in a minute.
The Last of Us is a story that will take you on a roller coaster of emotions. In the first ten minutes, the game will grip you with emotions that most games could only hope to do with 20+ hours of gameplay and story. You will lose yourself in the horrible post apocalyptic world that Joel and Ellie find themselves in and soon feel as if you are going on the journey yourself. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay challenging and fun, the story one for the ages, and its legacy will remain as one of the greatest video games of all time.
When I first released my reviews on BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us, I received a lot of criticism for saying that BioShock Infinite was a better game than The Last of Us… And it is something I stick by. BUT I want to make this clear the only reason I say that is because I do not believe in the concept of a tie when it comes to these lists. So when it comes to my ranking BioShock Infinite beats out The Last of Us by 0.00000001%.
But enough of the comparison. Let’s talk about what I can only call the greatest game of the PS3/XBox360 generation. Not only does the game have some of the most shockingly beautiful graphics I have ever seen but the story itself and the fact that it has something for every gamer is enough for me to say that this game is absolutely wonderful. I cannot find a single fault with it. When it came to an end of a generation, Irrational Games and 2K really pushed the envelope on what they could do with the power given to them and they did not disappoint. It is one of those games that anyone can play and be in awe of. Because of this, I have to say BioShock Infinite is the greatest game of 2013.
And with that 2013 is concluded for me in the realms of video games. I look forward to what comes for 2014. Until than if you enjoyed this review than please like and subscribe for more from me.
