Tanner Reviews I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell

I_hope_they_serve_beer_in_hell_posterWell I guess Shaila got her revenge on me for giving a 2/5 for Divergent. Because after seeing it, she made me sit down and watch this absolutely horrendous, pitiful, god awful excuse for a movie I have had the misfortune of seeing in quite some time. I will stress this, I have read some of the stories written by Tucker Max and I do not find it in any way funny. I do not think it is funny in an ironic sense, a straight forward sense, or any sense beyond that. From what I have read in this critics opinion, Tucker Max is nothing more than a sociopath who needs the help of a psychologist instead of interacting with society in any way. So to make a movie about a terrible person doing terrible things is something that does not need to be made. So with that being said… You can see where my opinions of this review are going to go.

I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell is the story of three people who should be sterilized as quickly as possible to keep from breeding. But in all seriousness the story is about a man named Dan (Geoff Stults) who is about to get married to a girl named Kristy (Keri Lynn Pratt) and is forced to go to his bachelor party by his narcissistic friend Tucker (Matt Czuchry). Along with their friend Drew (Jesse Bradford), they travel to a strip club in Salem against Kristy’s wishes for a night of stripping and binge drinking. The rest of the story is a mix of random happenstances, fucking redeemable strippers, shitting pants, and more bullshit that doesn’t even need to be re-uttered.

The Acting is Horrendous Across the Board

Everyone… Everyone is just appalling. There isn’t a decent actor in this mix. The characters who play Dan and Kristy have zero chemistry and seem like they just met on set ten minutes prior to filming instead of acting like a couple who is about to be married. Matt Czuchry I supposed can be passable as a narcissistic little shit that you just want to punch in the face. But I’m not sure if that is acting or if Czuchry is just naturally that unlikable. I understand that this is supposed to be a raunchy low brow comedy but that should not excuse the ‘actors’ from taking basic acting lessons on the side.

It Isn’t Funny and It Promotes a Terrible Style of Humor

The whole purpose of this humor just makes me squirm. I understand that given the context that anything can be funny… But not in this context. Not only is the movie unfunny, but when you add in the concepts of rape culture and achieving sexual satisfaction by being the worst person you could ever imagine, then you go from not just being unfunny, but offensive as well.

I do not find it funny that these guys go out with the intention of getting women drunk and having sex with them, I do not find it funny that they are just absolute assholes to everyone that they come across, and I do not find it funny that a guy shits his pants, and then makes a woman clean up his shit after he pays her off. It is low brow humor and poor humor at that.

Conclusion

There just isn’t much to say about this movie. It is horrible low brow comedy and is based on what is already a terrible book about terrible people doing terrible things. It isn’t funny, it isn’t cheeky, or so bad that it is good. It is absolutely appalling and it is in this critics hope that this movie and the book that it is based off of crawls back into the cesspool that it crawled out of and is never brought up again.

Final Score 0/5

Thank you for reading, if you enjoyed this review then please like and subscribe for more. You will have to forgive the short review, but with all the work on the invitational coming up, I am a little pressed for time. Return Thursday for another review from me and remember coming up this Friday and Saturday is the Annual HvZ:Athens Spring Invitational which you should attend.

  1. “Matt Czuchry I supposed can be passable as a narcissistic little shit that you just want to punch in the face. Looks like I’ll be avoiding this one like a cinematic plague.
