Today we are going to look at the best-selling console of all time and the games that came with it. Oh the PS2, if you are around my age then you owned one, your friends owned one, everyone owned one of these black beauties and with them came some of the best video games ever released. Back before the shit parade of console games that we see today left the station, people did turn to console gaming as a viable alternative to the at the time elitist PC Gaming crowd to enjoy a cheaper but still just as fun video game experience and it was the PS2 that sold out over its competitors the original Xbox, the Gamecube, and the now dead, yet strangely praised Sega Dreamcast. So today we are going to look at the ten games that helped make the PS2 what it is today with the Top 10 Playstation 2 games.
Before we begin this list I want to get a few things straight, first off and as always this is my own personal list created. I created this list based on the overall style of the game, how well it was perceived by critics, how well it has stood the test of time, the impact it has had on gamers, and the gaming community at large. I have tried to keep a limit on how many games from the same series, but there will be a few exceptions to this rule. Finally in order to make this list, the game had to originally be released on for the PS2 console. So games like Resident Evil 4 that were originally released for the Gamecube are out. With that being said, let’s start with a few honorable mentions.
Final Fantasy XII
Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
A game that would be much higher on the list if it wasn’t for the fact that over saturation lead to the game franchise’s untimely demise, Guitar Hero is a simplistic, yet ingenious concept. Ever wanted to play guitar in a rock band but never had the talent? Well that is okay because now here is Guitar Hero to fuel your fantasies. Guitar Hero came with its own guitar control and became a favorite at parties by including catchy music and competing for the high score. Not to mention anyone who could play Through the Fire and Flames by DragonForce on expert mode was considered a deity in and of their self.
I’m not the biggest fan of racing games in general, but I still cannot deny this game’s spot on the Top Ten Best PS2 Games. A visual marvel and has made a staple for itself as one of, if not the best racing series, surpassing the Need for Speed series. The selection of cars and tracks is numerous and the controls are tight. Grand Turismo 4 is quite possibly one of the greatest racing games ever made, competing with the likes of Mario Kart.
What is better than our favorite Disney characters and Final Fantasy games? Well what if we combine the two? An ingenious play by Disney as well as Square Enix, Kingdom Hearts is a staple of the video game industry. A mash-up for the ages, fans of both genres have become fervent over this series and its cast of amazing characters, the beautiful setting, and the light-hearted tone that can only come from a combination of the two worlds.
One of the first games on the PS2, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time should stand as a testament of how you bring a stellar game to a new console. With tight controls and gameplay that would later become the inspiration for games such as Dishonored and the Assassin’s Creed series, Sands of Time also incorporates an ingenious death mechanic that keeps you immersed in the world without losing track of the fact that you are playing a video game.
The first but not the last that this gaming juggernaut will find its way on this list, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is a love letter to the 1990s and a staple of the sandbox video game industry. Sporting a star-studded cast of voice actors and one of the largest and interactive maps in video game history, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is a legacy of Rockstar North and it and the other game to feature on this list made the gaming franchise what it is today.
One of the best games in the entire Final Fantasy series and arguably the best, Final Fantasy X was the perfect way to usher in the series into the next generation of video games with a massive open-ended world, ground breaking graphics, and the first game of the series to feature voice acting. It was also the first game of the series to spawn its own sequel, the much less well receipted but albeit worthwhile gaming experience of Final Fantasy X-2. While the years have been interesting for the series to say the least, the adventures of Tidus, Yuna, and their collection of friends on Spira will always be one of the many staples of the franchise.
This game looks like it is on par with gameplay and graphics that we see even today in the PS4/Xbox One generation. The story of a young man named Wander has he adventures and destroys gigantic monsters that would make some of Dark Souls villains to say ‘fuck off!’ all to resurrect a girl named Mono. An artistic marvel and a predecessor to which many games would base their creations on in the future, Shadow of the Colossus deserves it spot near the top.
If I were to make a list of the most underrated video games of all time, Okami would be the number one slot with very little competition in its wake. Okami is a visual masterpiece and is dripping with atmosphere and Japanese culture. Using water-color style graphics on top of a traditional Japanese mythology based story has created what is without a doubt one of the greatest video games of all time and I am thrilled to know that with its later release on the Nintendo Wii that this game has received the true critical and mass public praise it deserves.
This game in my opinion is the best game of the Grand Theft Auto series and that isn’t even a competition between the others in the series. GTA San Andreas and GTA V does not even hold a candle in my mind to what it is one of the greatest games ever made. Easily one of the most immersive experiences that I have ever had in a video game. You as a gamer get the experience of being propelled into the 1980s. The map was huge for the time, there was hours upon hours of content, and Tommy Vercetti is the perfect GTA anti hero. Easily the best in the franchise and one of the best of the Playstation 2 generation, only edged out by our number one.
This wasn’t even a challenge to decide which game goes to number one. Silent Hill 2 is one of the greatest games ever made with one of the greatest stories every told in the video game industry. It has gone through several remakes, reimaginings, and has found its way on just about every console and platform you can think of. But where did it find its first home? The Playstation 2 of course. This chilling and cerebral adventure into the fog covered town of Silent Hill remains one of the staples to survival horror and video gaming in general.
