Disney Princess MOVIES ONLY Ranked from Worst to Best

So… I got some rather stimulating comments last week about my list of the Disney Princesses ranked from worst to best. I got several comments on this front, but one of the main ones was some misconceptions of how I ranked the system. My ranking was based on the 11 Disney Princesses + Frozen because I felt Frozen was eventually going to become part of this group. Your opinion on whether or not it should be included on this list has been noted and as such… It will be included on this list. Life sucks, sometimes you don’t get what you want.

BUT, in order to understand that my last list was graded on a mix of the Disney Princess character, the film quality, AND the impact this character has had, I want to now create a new list to illustrate how a change in the dimensions of the list can alter its ranking. So with that being said, this time I will be ranking the 11 Disney Princess movies + Frozen in order of their film’s overall quality. With that being said, let’s start at number 12.

Sleeping_beauty_disney12 Sleeping Beauty

One thing that these posts can say about me is that I am just not a fan of Sleeping Beauty at all. The movie tends to be the most forgotten of the franchises and the only thing that is truly remembered is the villain, Maleficent. Sleeping Beauty tends to be a rather boring affair that is propped up by its nostalgia and its symbolism to the Disney Universe. While the movie is still good… It is the weakest movie of the chain.

Final Score: 2.5/5

Pocahontasposter11 Pocahontas

Just as low on this list as before, Pocahontas is just one of those movies that I will not get behind. The historical inaccuracies of the story is just a little too rough for me when we are considering the difference between two very attractive characters and the real world equivalent of a portly man and 11-year-old girl. Beyond this though, I just don’t feel that Pocahontas has much of a story. The plot feels traditional Disney formula with little deviation from that and none of the characters scream memorable.

I will give it that Pocahontas does have a bitching soundtrack… But that is just about all of that I am going to say on this end.

Final Score 2.5/5

220px-The_Princess_and_the_Frog_poster10 The Princess & The Frog

I think it is a foregone conclusion that The Princess & The Frog would end up still in the bottom 12. This is just one of those cases where fans demanded something they didn’t really want. The Princess & The Frog is good, but it just has that feeling that the writers were trying too hard to get that classic Disney feeling that all it did was come off forced.

Tiana is a decent Disney Princess and the movies is very striking in its design… But still not able to break out of the bottom 3.

Final Score: 2.5/5

Snow_White_1937_poster9 Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs

Oh how the might have fallen. In the previous list, I felt it was almost a necessity to include the first ever Disney Princess AT LEAST in the Top 6. But when we are talking about movie quality… Snow White just isn’t that great story wise. Don’t get me wrong, the movie is still a ground breaking classic. But so are most of the other films on this list so go ahead and get in line with the others.

Snow White is more of a display of the amazing animation then it is on its story which is rather lacking. Snow White, Seven Dwarfs, woodland critters, hilarity ensues until the evil witch shows up to fuck everything up. If I seem hard on this, well in all truth an honesty I am. This movie is still a classic and I will not take anything away from it in that department. But when it comes to the movie’s quality… Well it is great, but there are 8 more better than the first every Disney Princess.

Final Score: 4/5

Cinderella-disney-poster8 Cinderella

Cinderella may arguably be the text book example of a Disney Princess… But this doesn’t stop her movie from being kind of boring. I know that this is a different kind of movie and these other movies are much more actiony and modern. I also understand that I am a heterosexual white man and this movie may not necessarily be made for me, but even for those who it is made for, I just can’t see this movie being something intriguing to watch.

Sure, it is the old rags to riches story. But all of it can be summed up with abused woman goes to dance and meets prince, the end. This movie is still rock solid though, do not let my harsh words be deceptive. Cinderella is a cultural icon and the undoubtable Disney Princess. Just not high on my list when it comes to movies.

Final Score: 4/5

Final Score: 4/5

Brave_Poster7 Brave

Another movie I received criticism for… Brave is one of those movies that just isn’t really meant for me. I watched it once, enjoyed it, but never had a desire to watch it again. But from what I saw though, it was a very good movie and one that took a different formula than the others.

Focusing more on the relationships of a mother and daughter within a Disney movie is some solid stuff and can get all kinds of feelsy. I won’t put it higher than 7 because I still did not have enough strong feelings for it to justify a top 6 bid… But it was still solid.

Final Score: 4/5

Movie_poster_the_little_mermaid6 The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid pushes forward to the top 6 with the movie that kicked off the Disney Renaissance. This is the movie that started a generation of animated movies that will live on in the nostalgia of parents and their kids a like for years. The Little Mermaid on the level of animation, character, and story is completely solid. There are a couple of problems with the portrayal of Ariel but beyond that, it is a solid movie that deserves to be in the top 6.

Final Score: 4.5/5

Tangled_poster5 Tangled

When it comes to movie quality, it is Tangled that makes the biggest jump on this list. While Rapunzel as a Disney Princess can feel a little forced when it comes to the comedy. But as far as things are concerned, the movie is still rock solid. It is the first movie to turn the Disney Princess stereotype on its head and challenge some things that we take for granted in these movies. It was one of the first steps into a new form of Disney animation that is more modern than its predecessor and was able to ride the reverse fairy tail wave that Shrek started several years prior. Overall, it is a fun watch and worth your time.

Score: 4.5/5

Beautybeastposter4 Beauty & the Beast

My number one in the previous category finds itself falling to number 4 on this category. Beauty and the Beast is a rock solid story and Belle is still touted as the best Disney Princess in my book. But from a movie perspective… Two movies just beat it out. It may be the Stockholm Syndrome aspects and potential allowance of abuse that gets to me… I don’t know.

What I do know is that Beauty and the Beast is still a phenomenal movie. The story is tight and the characters are lovable. It may not be number one on this list, but it is still rock solid in my book.

Final Score: 4.5/5

Frozen_(2013_film)_poster3 Frozen

Remaining strong at number 3, I will still say Frozen is one of the best damn movies that I have seen from Disney in a very long time. I have already reviewed this movie in the past, so I do not feel the need to go into detail. If you would like to read my review of Frozen, please check my review on that.

But beyond that, I will say that Frozen is clearly in the number 3rd in just about every list that I can create.

Final Score: 5/5

Movie_poster_mulan2 Mulan

When it came to the three criteria system, Mulan was kind of the one that found itself on the outside looking in to the Top 3… When it comes to movie alone… Mulan owns just about everyone. The music is some of the catchiest music in the history of Disney. Seriously, you are singing let’s get down to business right now, admit it. The characters are great, Mulan represents the first Disney Princess to truly take on a SERIOUS active role in being a motherfucking soldier and defeating the entire Hun army. Mulan is every definition of a badass and this fact is reflected in her movie. In fact, there is only one that is able to beat out this stellar flick.

Final Score: 5/5

220px-Aladdinposter1 Aladdin

As I said in the first list, out of all the Disney Princess movies, the best  in terms of style, animation, story, and impact on the American Cinematic Culture at large is Aladdin. This movie was one of the cornerstones to the Disney Renassiance and was by every stretch of the term ‘a perfect movie’. Everything about it comes together to create something so astonishing that I still find new things to praise it for as the years go on.

Aladdin missed the top spot due to the fact that Jasmine was a supporting character to Aladdin’s story. But when it comes to movie quality alone, there is no comparison… Aladdin is victorious.

Final Score: 5/5

Thank you for reading and as always, if you enjoyed this review, please like and subscribe for more from me. I’m sorry for the late posts guys, I promise I will try to get back on a full track very soon.
