2016 can finally be put to bed for me. I can now focus on the 2017 movies… Which is in January… The literal graveyard of movies where shitty horror movies and poorly conceived Oscar bait dwell… OH GOD HELP ME! But… Before I wade waist deep in the cesspool that is January movies, I do want to have one last fond memory of movies that made me smile in 2016. So this is the annual list of the greats, the Best Movies of 2016!
I do want to reiterate like the broken record that I am that these are ONLY MOVIES I HAVE SEEN AND REVIEWED! It you are wondering why a movie got a snub from me, it is probably because I did not see it. I try to see as many movies as possible. But I am just one man on the internet working on a grad student budget. I’m not exactly swimming in the cash.
I also want to state one more time that this is the BEST movies of 2016, not Tanner’s FAVORITE movies of 2016. That would be an amazingly different list. I am judging movies on the quality of the movie, the ambition of the product, and the staying power of a film in the history of cinema. So even though one movie was my favorite, it might not even be on this list at all. So with those said, let’s get this list kicked off with an honorable mention. Sorry for the delayed post. Life has been hectic since I got home. But I think things are starting to settle down a little bit. But over the Thanksgiving weekend, I got to see the latest Disney movie, Moana. What more can I say? The movie is fucking wonderful! Of course it is wonderful! It is Disney! Their absolute worst is great and their movies are constantly a symbol for childhoods for damn near a century. So yeah, Moana is stellar and I am soon going to tell you all the reasons why.
Moana is, naturally, the story of Moana (Auli’i Cravalho). She is the daughter of the chief and as such, has to lead her people. However, Moana truly wants to sail past the reef, something that is forbidden by her people. However, after things start dying on the island, Moana’s grandmother, Tala (Rachel House) reveals that their people used to be voyagers on the sea and that she is chosen to save the earth by returning the heart of Tefiti to its rightful home after it was stolen by the mischievous Maui (Dwayne Johnson).
So Moana sets off to find Maui and return the Heart of Tefiti to its proper place, thus restoring balance and saving the world. Continue reading “Tanner Reviews Moana”
I FINALLY SAW THIS MOVIE! It took me several months and a lot of shitty movies along the way, but I finally saw it and I am so damn content! I mean, it is Disney. They have to work hard to fail and even their failures are enjoyable to watch. Zootopia is a wonderful movie, plain and simple. It is sweet, caring, has a great message, and is easily going to be one of the best movies of 2016. But okay, I’ve been doing this for four years now and everyone knows we are not going to stop at that. Let’s dive into what makes this movie so damn good.
Not willing to be held by back societal norms, rabbit Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) excels at the police academy and is sent to work in Zootopia, which as always been her dream. Once she arrives though, she realizes life isn’t what it is cracked up to be, and she is quickly stuck with the position of meter maid. One day, a family comes in asking about a missing otter which puts Judy on the case by sheer force of willpower being in the same room at the same time. Along with the help of fox and small time hustler, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman) the two set out to discover what dark secrets are lucking inside Zootopia. Continue reading “Tanner Reviews Zootopia”
Anyone who was a kid during the mid 80’s and early 90’s will remember the Saturday Morning Cartoons. They were the celebration of every kids day. We all had our favorites: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He Man, GI Joe: The Great American Hero, and of course my favorite Transformers. I was born at the tail end of the 80’s so most of these TV Shows I watched thanks to some friends of mine who would lend me their VHS tapes. But man, I loved everything about that 80’s animation style and all the coolness that came with it as they tried to sell me shit. I have written copious amounts of reviews and lists in the past about this subject, so I think it is a foregone conclusion on how I feel about these lovely pieces of animated 80’s cheese.
One continued pattern of these TV shows, though, is the fact that they were all geared towards boys. Welcome to the 80’s, when gender roles were still running rampant all over the place! But either way, someone saw all of the merch that these guys were ringing in and said ‘we need something that appeals to girls too!’ So in the consumerist world that we live in, Jem and the Holograms was born! So… I got some rather stimulating comments last week about my list of the Disney Princesses ranked from worst to best. I got several comments on this front, but one of the main ones was some misconceptions of how I ranked the system. My ranking was based on the 11 Disney Princesses + Frozen because I felt Frozen was eventually going to become part of this group. Your opinion on whether or not it should be included on this list has been noted and as such… It will be included on this list. Life sucks, sometimes you don’t get what you want.
BUT, in order to understand that my last list was graded on a mix of the Disney Princess character, the film quality, AND the impact this character has had, I want to now create a new list to illustrate how a change in the dimensions of the list can alter its ranking. So with that being said, this time I will be ranking the 11 Disney Princess movies + Frozen in order of their film’s overall quality. With that being said, let’s start at number 12. When it comes to movies and characters, you will be hard pressed to find a set of characters as iconic and trans-generational as The Disney Princesses. Starting from their first movies in 1937 with Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs and continuing down the line to the most recent addition, 2013’s Frozen, there are very few characters that represent the majesty and wonder that the Disney Corporation strives to be. The Disney Princesses are a collection of some of the timeless classic movies in American Cinematic History and I guarantee that each and every person who reads this list has at least one of these movies that is near and dear to your heart. So I decided that it was high time to take each of these 12 movies and list them from the Worst at number 12 all the way down to the Best Disney Princess movie out there.
I am going to stress HARD that this was not an easy list to make. There are so many factors that go into this list and so many ways that I could list them. SO FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE READY TO JUDGE ME, here is how I am going to create this list. If I were to make a list solely on how good or bad the movie is or how these movies had an impact on the culture at large, this would be a VERY different list. So, what I decided was to limit my list to a certain criteria.
First off, I will only be including the eleven movies that are currently representing the Disney Princesses AND one movie that, I personally feel, is soon going to be included in this list; so much so that I feel that there inclusion is absolutely needed. So movies like The Hunchback of Notre Dame with Esmerelda, The Lion King with Nala, and Atlantis: The Lost Empire with Kida are out. So sorry, them’s the breaks kids. Take it up with Disney, not me. Also, I will be looking at each of these movies for their critical strengths, the impact that these movies have had on our culture, and of the character of the princess’s themselves. Ultimately, some movies may be ‘better’ than others, but due to the role of the princess in the movie, they may be brought down a peg or two. I will attempt to make my points clear with each group. Also, please keep in mind that just because a movie is low on my list does not mean that I think the movie is bad. On the contrary, even the lowest movie on my list would receive a 2.5/5 from me. So that tells you the kind of competition that we have. With that being said, let’s get started. Continue reading “Disney Princess Movies Ranked from Worst to Best”
Thanks again to my wonderful girlfriend Kitty who is the proud owner of an X-Box One to allow me to play some of the games that she has bought over the year. My last trek has left me with a strong impression of today’s subject, Disney Infinity: Marvel Superheroes. An action and adventure sandbox game, this interesting look into the future of gaming includes little figurines that you place on a port to play as the given character or use a certain level. After giving the game a little go, I have to say that it was quite a rewarding experience and one I had a great deal of fun playing.
Disney Infinity: Marvel Superheroes doesn’t have a lot of a plot per say as much as it has an open sandbox world with several quests along the way to give a try. You get to play as some of your favorite Marvel and Disney characters dependent upon which of the figurines you have at your disposal. You adventure around the city and enjoy life as a superhero, saving lives, or just fucking with people. The choice is really up to you. It took me long enough but at last, I got to see the Disney movie that everyone has been talking about, Frozen. This film has been intriguing me since its release in late November of last year and the comments from critics across the internet have been almost unanimous praise. They have stated it is a return to form for Disney Animation Studios and a film that has not been seen from them since the Disney Renaissance of the 90’s… So when I hear that the first thing that comes to mind is ‘DAMN!’ that is a bold claim to make all things considered.
It isn’t like Disney Animation Studios has been in trouble since the end of the Disney Renaissance. Just look at movies like Tangled and Wreck-It Ralph has proof that they have released some amazing stuff. But even they were not given the high praise that Frozen has been receiving. So needless to say, when you hear this coming from the mouths of critics everywhere you need to go see what all the fuss is about. After seeing it… I have to say they are right… This movie is absolutely phenomenal and one of the greatest movies to ever come out of Disney Animation Studios AND THAT is saying something. Instead of seeing the ‘Superb Owl’, Brandon, Shaila, and I went to see the Five Animated Short Films and three honorable mentions nominated at the 86th Academy Awards. Brandon and I decided to jump on the camera and give our reactions.
List of Short Films reviewed include:
Get a Horse!
Room on the Broom
The Lost Scarf
A La Francais
The Blue Umbrella

Well… My camera has finally died. It has been a long time coming and I have been seeing the writing on the wall for a while. But I was hoping it would hold out until I could afford a new one… But I suppose not. For the time being it looks like I am going to have to be a web cam hero until I can get the money to replace it. But either way, the footage I got for the Nerdiest Talk Show on Earth is pretty much unusable. So… I got to come up with something for the Thursday slot quick. So why not make a list? They are pretty easy to get finished and they are entertaining. Also, it gives me another chance to get nostalgic. So let’s talk about the 90’s. The 90’s was the time that I got to be a kid. Being born in 1989, I pretty much got to experience the full force of what it means to be a ’90’s kid.’ I will admit I had an awesome childhood, so I might be biased. But in retrospect, I honestly believe that the 1990’s was one of the best times to be a child. Continue reading “Top 5 Reasons Why It Was Great to be a Child in the 90’s”
