Well this is it. The last video game post of 2016. This year I suprisingly had a higher number of video game reviews then I had last year. So this should definitely be a more well rounded list. As always, the Best and worst of 2016 will come near the beginning of January after one last hurrah at the movie theater to pick up a few stragglers at the end. The video game best and worst list will be recorded and both lists will be published to Tanner Reviews as well as Project Derailed. So look forward to that coming up soon. But for now, let’s talk about one of my favorite games of 2016, Final Fantasy XV. After the abysmal showing of Final Fantasy XIII I had little faith in the franchises ability to keep modernizing as time goes on. The irritating main cast combined with the never ending corridor displayed a crisis, in my eyes, with the Final Fantasy franchise. After Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn was a success, I thought they would just take the Ultima route and just focus 100% of their energy on the MMORPG scene. But boy was I wrong! Final Fantasy XV came back with a bang with a combination of classic RPG feels, modern setting, as well as a 1950’s/modern day motif, this has proven to truly be the sleeper hit of 2016 just as the year is coming to a close. Hello, I’m Shaila Meeker of freeappmaven.com. I typically review apps, but this week I’m continuing one of the many discussions Tanner and I have had about video games. We have long talks about our favorite games, but I’m not keen to be on camera, so my list is appearing here. I’ve been a gamer for as long as I can remember, starting with the Super Nintendo when I was around 5. After that I progressed to the Playstation and quickly grew to love JRPGS. As much as I enjoy my Playstation, I’m also pretty fond of my PC and it’s growing on me more and more. *gasp* I might even start calling myself a PC gamer. Though, I will never give up my beloved console-only JRPGs; they’re an appropriate exception. I have to agree with Tanner that PC is becoming more of the way to go, especially with the underwhelming releases for the latest console generation. That aside, here are my picks for my favorite games of all time. I don’t consider these the best games to exist, but they all hold a special place for me and several thousand, yes thousand, hours of my life that I’ve spent playing them.
Note: The consoles listed are what I played them on, not which version is the best. I have not played them on each system. Continue reading “Shaila’s Top 10 Games of All Time”
I am not one to say that one specific genre of video games is superior to any other. All games are fun and enjoyable in their own rights; First Person Shooters, Third Person Shooters, Real Time Strategy, Turn Based Strategy, Puzzle, Sports Games, Platformers, Point and Click, and just about any other genre you can think of. They are all wonderful and it all depends on the game you are trying to make and you either succeed or fail within your given field. A game like The Stanley Parable is a far more superior to a game like Aliens: Colonial Marines. Even though Aliens: Colonial Marines has more content on just about every level, The Stanley Parable is a far better and more successful game because it succeeds at its goal far better than a game like Aliens: Colonial Marines.
However!… If you were to twist my arm, I would be more inclined to give more props to Role-Playing Games. RPGs simply have so much that goes into them. A humongous and expansive world that you can explore and interact with, giving the sensation that you have actually been transported to this world and have become this protagonist, and the ability to customize your own character to your style of game play. Role Playing Games just have so much to put into them and when you create an amazing one like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or the early Final Fantasy games… You are pretty much guaranteed an instant classic. So seeing as how the two games on my list, Saints Row IV and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch are currently tied up in prior engagements, I find myself with an open slot for this fine Saturday. That being said, I’ve decided to reach into the vault and pull out a game that I for one feel gets a little more shit than it deserves. Plus Final Fantasy XIV is coming out soon so it is sort of relevant. But granted, with scores ranging in the 80’s on sites like Metacritic and Game Ranking this could be a bit of a missed number. But what really brings the derision to Final Fantasy X-2 is the hardcore Final Fantasy fans who saw their gaming franchise take a hard right turn straight into bubbly J-Pop, Powerpuff Girls territory…. Which I can completely understand. Up until the point of Final Fantasy X-2, the community was used to very serious stories and very linear story telling of a hero being called upon to save the world. So I am not going to stand here and say that all of the anger for this game is completely unfounded… I just think that the anger clouds the judgment of what is by all accounts a relatively fun and lighthearted adventure.
