Tanner Reviews Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

fantastic_beasts_and_where_to_find_them_posterMan wasn’t this satisfying. It has been quite some time since I have heard the Harry Potter theme playing on the big screen and it certainly didn’t disappoint. While still apart, but not adhering to the wave of nostalgia hitting movies lately, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them takes the Harry Potter world in a completely new direction, changing the setting to the 1920’s America. While it may not take the top spot as best movie of the year, this one will certainly rank up there as one of the best movie going experiences of 2016.

In 1920’s United States, the eventual writer of the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has traveled across the Atlantic for a specific undisclosed reason. Once he gets their, he quickly learns that the United States community of wizards and witches takes a dim view to magical creatures and has outright banned them. After a particularly nasty incident in a bank involving an adorable niffler stealing anything that is shiny and not nailed to the ground as well as running into Newt’s eventual lovable sidekick and non magic user Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), Newt is taken to the United States Magical Congress headquarters by eventual love interest Porpentina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston). After the congress does not take Goldstein seriously, Newt and Tina go their separate ways until the plot pulls them back together when a mysterious creature begins to reak havoc throughout the city of London.  Continue reading “Tanner Reviews Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

5 Mistakes Most Young Adult Movies Make

The_Maze_Runner_poster.jpgI know, already, that I am going to get some shit for this list. Fans of the young adult genre, both movies and books, cling tightly to their fandoms and will tear the throats out of anyone who disagrees with them or challenges them. I fear that once this post is up and on my website that I am going to have angry people spanning from 14-23 ready to burn down my house and steal my kittens. But no matter the consequences, this is something that has been a long time coming.

Young Adult movies have had a huge surgance since the mid 2000’s. Before someone corrects me to tell me they have been around before then, I am well aware that the genre has been around for decades. However, with Harry Potter and Twilight came a massive wave of young adult movies and more popular books that has been in the forefront of the movie industry for some time. While the movies have waned in popularity over the years, they certainly hold a strong following of people who will see them and fight anyone who says bad things about them to their last breath. While the genre has certainly  been a rollercoaster from the acclaimed Harry Potter franchise to the dregs of horrendousness that was The Host, there are certain mistakes that this movie genre continues to make that cannot be ignored. So with that being said, this list is to commemorate 5 mistakes that the majority of Young Adult Movie Adaptations continue to make.

I should stress a few ground rules. First off, I will primarily be focusing on young adult book to movie adaptations. Second, I do not deny that some of these mistakes have permeated to other movie genres. Some of these things can be found outside the young adult spectrum. What I am saying is that young adult movies are the worst culprits of this. Third, I am NOT saying that young adult movies are bad!!! I want to make that perfectly clear. There are some out there that I like. I am not making a blanket statement! With that said, let’s get going. Continue reading “5 Mistakes Most Young Adult Movies Make”

5 Deaths that Devastated Fandoms

It is a sad fact of life, but where there is a fandom of fervent fans who absolutely love a TV show, movie series, or video game… There is going to be deaths so tragic that it just brings a tear to your eye at the mere sound or sight of their name. Those characters that will always be remembered tragically and with contempt for the creators for taking our beloved treasures away from us. This list is to commemorate 5 of those characters who left us with a void in our heart that simply could not be replaced.

So here are the Rules
One character per franchise. Harry Potter has a plethora of tragic deaths… But only one can be chosen.
The character has to stay dead or have a complete character redesign.
There is no rhyme or reason to this list. It is just ten characters whose deaths hurt the most.
If I missed someone from your favorite fandom, I’ll be honest it might just be because I missed it… Or I just don’t care about that particular fandom.
There are spoilers from this point on. So if you get upset… Oh well, not my problem. Continue reading “5 Deaths that Devastated Fandoms”
