So when I first began writing this review, I had a completely different opening then what I have written here. Originally, I was going to say this review was going to be similar to my Resident Evil Gaiden review in that there isn’t a lot to talk about. Seeing as how Resident Evil Outbreak 2 in my opinion is just a lesser version of Outbreak with less of the charm and adding on all of the problems that kept the first one as strong as it was… But then I started writing and realized… Wow I have a lot to talk about on this one. This game is up there for one of the RE games that frustrates me the most. While it cannot really compete with the incompetence of Survivor or the utter failure that is RE 6, it is at least in that ballpark so keep that in mind as we get into this one. When I first heard that there would be a remake to the first Resident Evil… The levels of fanboy nerdery excitement were well over 9000. I had been waiting for this for so long. FINALLY a remake of the original, same story, same characters, all that they did was fix the borked dialogue and add in a few more villains and scenes. I was stoked, I was thrilled, I waited in anticipation for the game to release… And it was a Nintendo Gamecube exclusive……………………… Fuck. I’ll be honest this review is going to be short. There just really is not much to talk about here. Resident Evil Gaiden is probably one of if not the most obscure game in the entire RE universe and is not only dubbed as ‘non-canon’ but really the game had no chance of leaving any lasting identity on the world. And we are back to the main story after deviating from the path with Survivor we return to one of our favorite characters from RE 2 Claire Redfield and her hunt to find her brother Chris. After this one folks be prepared because we will not be touching the main story for a LONG TIME. Resident Evil: Code Veronica is probably the most bizarre game in the main story line, one of the more forgotten, the only game in the main series to not be numbered, and one of the more underrated games of its time. I mean don’t get me wrong this thing was praised up and down upon its release but nowadays when you get any number of RE fans into a room to talk about there favorite games this one never gets pulled up and it really is a shame that it doesn’t because this game is a shit load of fun. I have not been looking forward to this day at all. Leading up to this point Resident Evil was one of the most solid franchises around. With three fantastic games under their belt it felt like nothing could go wrong with the series… And then the Gun Survivor series came out and pretty much butt fucked that whole idea. While many people have been picking on RE6 and Operation: Raccoon City… (Myself included) these games seem to get a free pass and it isn’t because they are good or got a lot of bad flack that they didn’t deserve. These games blow and blow harder than any $2 whore. But on top of all that they are completely forgetable. With the exception of fans of the series I doubt any casual gamer even knows of their existence and with the fact that the original characters from these games never appear again in any of the future games it can be assumed by me at least that CAPCOM felt so ashamed of them that they want them to stay in the twisted world of obscurity where they belong. I feel bad enough pulling them back out of the ‘Things Best Left Dead’ section of my closet but this is a retrospective so I suppose they need to be covered… So let’s do it. Continue reading “Tanner’s Resident Evil Retrospective: RE: Survivor”
And now we reach the point in the Retrospective where we talk about my favorite Resident Evil game of the entire series. No joke, Resident Evil 3: Nemesis is my favorite game in the entire franchise and one of my favorite video games of all time.
It just feels like the perfect storm of what I look for in a zombie survival horror game. An interesting setting, interesting characters, the constant fear of being stalked by this massive unstoppable creature, the game I feel is just the crowning achievement of what could be done with the PS1 and to this day I wish that they would remake the game like the did with the first game. Just the same game with PS3 graphics. Continue reading “Tanner’s Resident Evil Retrospective: RE3: Nemesis”
Resident Evil… One of the most well known and well loved gaming franchises in the history of video games and along with Silent Hill brought the survival horror genre of video games crashing into the turn of the century. While their were many survival horror games before it, Resident Evil did mark the beginning of the next wave of survival horror and became a template for how survival horror was used in the future. Since its creation in 1999, the game has spawned an entire universe as well as one of the shittiest movie franchises of all time (I will tragically get to those later with tears in my eyes).
