9 Acclaimed Movies… That I Cannot Stand

So, first and foremost I do want to say that these Thursday breaks are going to cease. This week I will not only be having Crit or Miss but I will also be changing my movie reviews from written to a YouTube format as well with the new video show Tanner At the Movies.

With that being said though, this will now be my fourth and going on fifth year running this site. All things considered, I do consider myself a movie critic as anyone else would. I do watch movie and review them based on merit and my own critical opinion. While my opinion may or may not be regarded as highly as other more prominent critics, I do consider myself in the same field as narcissistic as that may seem.

Critics are an interesting lot and we are all different as, naturally, human opinions are different. My reviewing style of movies is going to be similar but different to other critics like Leonard Maltin, Roger Ebert, and certainly vastly different to someone like Rex Reed. I have always said it, to truly gage a critics merit you should not look at the movies they review highly, but the movies they review negatively. If you simply pantomime the positive and negative critiques of the general public, you really are just miming what everyone thinks. While the majority of movies do fall into a certain range, there are some movies that are considered “great” or “timeless” that gets under our skins. For instance, Roger Ebert famously gave a highly negative review to A Clockwork Orange and Caligula. Two movies that will go down as being excellent or at least influential. I am certainly no different. There are tons of movies out there that are lauded as classics or at least great movies that I just cannot stand. This list is going to commemorate those movies.

This is the Top 10 Critically Acclaimed Movies… That I Cannot Stand! Now, I am going to list this list on two scales. The first of which being the way in which the movie is received and how much it truly irritates me. With that being said, let’s start with some dishonorable mentions. 5 Good Movies From Terrible Directors

A long time ago, I wrote a list of terrible movies made by great directors and after thinking back on it, I never did give the devil his due. There are some terrible directors out there, but just like great directors are not immune from pushing out absolute crap, bad directors can sometimes get lucky every now and again. So with that being said, I am going to make a list to commemorate those terrible directors that got lucky a time or two. This is 5 Good Movies by Terrible Directors! Top 5 Bad Movies… By Otherwise Great Directors

Just like in the real world, there is always that one job that we are not proud of or will want to keep off of our resumes. It is a sad fact of life, sometimes you need money, sometimes you think it is a good idea that turns into a horrific mistake, and sometimes you just do not care. Even in Hollywood, the best in the business are not free from churning out mind numbing schlock. This may be for any number of reasons like the ones listed above, but make no mistake… Just about everyone had done something they are not proud of and Hollywood’s best directors are no exception to this. So today I want to bring these illustrious directors into the infamous spotlight, by showcasing the Top 5 Bad Movies… By Otherwise Great Directors! Tanner Reviews The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

TheboyposterLet’s talk about Nazi Exploitation films. Movies that use the mere existence of Nazis in order to fuel the appeal to watch their film. While most of these films have several sexual overtones, this is not always the case. You have your classics your Ilsa: She Wolf of the SS and your Tinto Brass’s Salon Kitty. They are typically some of the most gruesome movies out there. There to say ‘Hey, you know those Nazis?! Yeah… They were pretty fucked up!’ With movies that feature Nazis sexing people up and later castrating them on scene, yeah they can get pretty intense. That being said, most of them typically have two things in common. A) They are pretty intense movies and B) they use the concepts of Adolf Hitler and his Third Reich as a means to get people to shell out the money for the product. With that being said, the 2008 movie The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is in this critics opinion the most well polished Nazisploitation movie that I have ever seen. A  heartbreaking historical drama about a young boy who unwittingly becomes friends with a Jewish boy in a concentration camp is nothing more than a thin veil behind what is by all means a shallow movie that exploits the concept of Nazis to attempt to gain money and be used as Oscar Bait.
